PRINCETON, N.J. -- Caroline Barton will represent the USA at the World Cross Country Championships tomorrow, Jan. 10, in Tallahassee, Fla.
Competing against the best runners in the world, she will participate in the women's U20 race at 10:20 a.m.
The honor comes after Barton took third place at the USATF U20 Cross Country Championships on Dec. 7 in Portland, Oregon, qualifying her for tomorrow's race.
At the USATF championships, Barton finished the women's 6k in just 21:54.6, clocking in with only two runners ahead of her in a field of 28.
The World XC Championships, often called 'the toughest footrace on the planet', will be held in Tallahassee at the Apalachee Regional Park cross country course.
Since it hosted the NCAA Championships in 2021, when Tiger Fiona Max represented Princeton, there have been new additions to the course. For this meet, the course will feature obstacles that pay homage to Florida's culture, such as a "rollercoaster" ramp, wooden alligators, and mud and sand pits.
This cross country season, Barton made her debut for the Tigers, earning First Team All-Ivy honors with a fifth place finish.
As a first-year, Barton is already representing the USA on the international level, a prestigious achievement not pursued by any Tiger in at least the last decade.
Still, Princeton's ties to the World XC Championships go back, with Lynn Jennings '83 winning the title three times in 1990, 1991 and 1992. The last time the USA hosted the event, in Boston, 1992, Jennings won it.
Tomorrow, Barton will add her name to the list of Tigers who represented their nation on the international level. Princeton grad India Weir '23 will also be representing Great Britain in Tallahassee.
The World XC Championships will be streamed on CNBC and Peacock tomorrow morning, with the first race beginning at 9:45.
