Softball Team Splits Opening Doubleheader in San Diego
March 07, 2026 | Softball
Splitting its first two games of a five-game stay in San Diego on Saturday, the Princeton softball team saw a top-25 opponent in Grand Canyon rally for a 7-4 win in the opener before bouncing back with an 11-10 win over San Diego later in the day.
Grand Canyon entered the weekend ranked between No. 20 and No. 23 across four national polls and improved to 26-0 with the win over Princeton.
Against GCU, Princeton hung right with the unbeaten Lopes and took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning. Maddie Ratcheson singled to open the frame, Julia Dumais was hit by a pitch, and after Sonia Zhang was also plunked with the bases loaded, San Diegan Jessica Phelps reached on an error that brought home two runs. Abby Hornberger later added an RBI groundout for the 4-1 lead, but Grand Canyon broke the game open with four runs in the sixth and added two more in the seventh to pull away for the 7-4 win.
The Tigers answered in game two with 17 hits in the 11-10 victory over San Diego. Princeton scored in six of the seven innings, putting up two runs in the first, three in the second, then adding single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh around a three-run fifth.
Julia Dumais set the tone at the top of the order, finishing 2 for 3Â with three runs scored and an RBI, while Graciela Dominguez went 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI. Jessica Phelps added three hits, including two doubles, and Princeton also got a home run from Abby Hornberger. Sonia Zhang drove in runs in both the first and second innings, and Dominguez delivered another RBI single in the fifth.
San Diego made things close late with a six-run seventh, but Princeton held on to secure the split. Cassidy Shaw earned the win in relief, and the Tigers improved to 6-5 with the victory.
Princeton continues play in San Diego with two more games Sunday, taking on San Diego State at 2 p.m. ET and Notre Dame at 4:30 p.m. ET.
