Jamel Mutunga knows what it takes to produce one of the top-ranked offenses in the FCS. Over the last three seasons, he has served as running backs coach for two teams that ranked inside the Top 10 nationally, and he helped produce an All-Ivy League season for Tiger running back Charlie Volker.
Mutunga, who was part of the Lehigh coaching staff when the Mountain Hawks had the sixth-ranked offense in the FCS, will enter his third season as running backs coach when the 2019 season arrives. Over his first two seasons at Princeton, he has helped the Tigers create a Top-10 rushing offense in the FCS, and he helped coach the team to a historic perfect 2018 season.
He has also helped both Charlie Volker and Collin Eaddy earn All-Ivy League recognition over the last two seasons. Volker earned first-team honors in 2018 after rushing for an Ivy-best 14 touchdowns and 675 yards. Princeton's top three running backs each averaged at least 7.0 yards per carry, and the team rushed for 489 yards in a title-clinching win over Yale.
Volker earned second-team All-Ivy League honors during his 2017 season, when he ranked second in the Ivy League with 14 rushing touchdowns. He broke a Princeton record when he scored on a 96-yard rushing touchdown at Brown, one of four he scored that day. He had three games with at least three touchdowns for the Tigers, who averaged 38.2 points per game during the season.
Mutunga also coached Eaddy, who earned the Donold B. Lourie Award as Princeton's top offensive freshman during the 2017 season and rushed for 663 yards and four touchdowns in 2018.
Mutunga had plenty of coaching success during his five years before Princeton, starting with two at Muhlenberg College as the tight ends and halfbacks coach. Over his three years at Lehigh, he helped develop Dominick Bragalone into one of the most feared rushers in the FCS. After gaining more than 1,000 yards on the ground his freshman season, Bragalone rushed for nearly 100 yards per game (1,171 yards for the season) during Lehigh's Patriot League championship season. A two-time first-team All-Patriot League honoree, Bragalone was named the 2015 Patriot League Rookie of the Year.
Mutunga starred at Gettysburg College, where he was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at running back from 2007-09. He had 2,804 career rushing yards and earned All-Centennial Conference honors three times. Mutunga tied a Centennial Conference record with five rushing touchdowns in one game and finished his career third on the Gettysburg all-time list with 38 touchdowns.
A native of Bel Air, Maryland, Mutunga graduated from Gettysburg in 2011 with Bachelor's degrees in Business Administration and Economics.
