Axel Damiens
- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Axel Damiens, a first-team All-Big West honoree during his career at Cal Poly, joined the Princeton men's tennis staff as a volunteer assistant coach in July 2019.
"We are delighted to have Axel join our coaching staff at Princeton," Princeton coach Billy Pate said upon Damiens' hiring. "Following his playing career at Cal Poly, he did a tremendous job assisting their program during the past season. Axel has incredible enthusiasm and energy along with a great background coming from France and being a successful college player. He has a strong desire for a career in college coaching and I know our student-athletes will benefit from his competitive passion."
Damiens played from 2014-18 at Cal Poly before serving as a student assistant coach during the 2018-19 season. He earned first-team all-league doubles honors as a senior in 2018 while serving as a team captain. Damiens finished as one of five players in program history to reach 50 singles wins and was top-eight in program history in combined singles and doubles winning percentage. He helped Cal Poly to an ITA team ranking as high as 33rd during his career and, in the classroom, was a multi-time Dean's List honoree. Outside of Cal Poly, Damiens, who is from Feucherolles, France, west of Paris, played in several ITF professional tournaments and in professional league tennis in France.
Damiens' season as an assistant coach, during which he finished his business administration degree with a marketing concentration, saw Cal Poly place five players on All-Big West Conference teams and finish the season ranked 70th as a team by the ITA.
Damiens' father, Christophe, earned doubles All-America honors during his career at Mississippi State, where he was a teammate of Billy Pate.
