Wakefield scored six goals for the Tigers as a sophomore. He had a pair of two goals performances: in a shutout of Fordham and in the ECAC tournament against Iona. His most important goal, however, came late in the Southern title game against Navy, when Wakefield scored to knot the game at 8-8 as the Tigers came back to draw even and later won.
Wakefield began playing water polo as a freshman in high school. He went on to co-captain his high school team and earn honors in both water polo and swimming. He was a two-time high school All-America pick in swimming and a first-team all-state and honorable mention All-America selection in water polo. Wakefield led Pioneer to state championships in both sports.
