COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins, ranked second in the nation, scored five unanswered goals in the first half to rout the No. 17 Princeton field hockey team 8-2 Friday night. The win avenges a pair of Princeton victories over the past two years--a 4-0 win that knocked Maryland out of the 1997 NCAA tournament and a 1-0 classic last year at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Keli Smith and Caroline Walter both had two goals for the Terrapins, who improved to 14-1 with the win. Melanie Meerschwam (Jr., Amstelveen, The Netherlands) and Kristen Skorupski (Fr., Hatfield, Mass.) scored second-half goals for the Tigers, who were outshot 19-10 and outcornered 11-6. Princeton is now 6-4.
The Tigers return to Class of 1952 Stadium on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest against Syracuse. The Tigers defeated the Orangewomen 7-0 last year in Syracuse.
