PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton University women's volleyball team played its regular season schedule with one primary goal in mind. It wanted the top spot when the eight Ivy League teams met at Dartmouth in two weekends for the Ivy League tournament.
Mission accomplished.
Princeton needed two wins this weekend and a little bit of help to get the No. 1 seed for the upcoming postseason tournament. It took care of its own business, taking down Columbia 3-0 and Cornell 3-1. Those wins, combined with a Brown victory over Harvard, secured the coveted seed.
The Tigers had little trouble with Columbia, routing the Lions 15-5, 15-5, 15-6. Sabrina King (Jr., Laguna Beach, Calif.) had 15 kills and 15 digs to lead the way while Melissa Ford (Sr., Newport Beach, Calif.) had 36 assists, two kills and three assisted blocks.
Princeton had to work a little harder the next night. Upset-minded Cornell took the first game 16-14 and had Princeton sweating out the second game. The Tigers held on for a tough 15-10 win, which deflated the Big Red. Princeton won the next two games easily 15-4 and 15-2. Emily Brown (Jr., Palo Alto, Calif.), continued her amazing season with another effective night, killing 14 of 25 balls with no errors. Princeton's other middle hitter, Alexis Collins (So., Los Angeles, Calif.), added eight kills and eight digs in the effort.
The Tigers have won 10 Ivy League titles in women's volleyball and certainly have the talent to win their eleventh. Besides a 3-0 loss to Harvard, Princeton won 18 of its other 19 Ivy games this year. Pairings for the tournament will be announced later this week.
