PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton University women's volleyball team will travel to Provo, Ut., for a first-round NCAA tournament date with BYU on Friday, Dec. 3. The time for the match has yet to be announced.
Princeton is the 14th seed in the East bracket and is making its third ever NCAA tournament appearance. The Tigers received the automatic berth via their 11th Ivy League championship. Princeton went 4-0 in the Ivy League tournament, including a pair of tight five-game matches over Harvard to clinch the championship. Princeton is currently 23-6 overall and has played in two NCAA tournaments, most recently losing to Maryland in three games in 1997.
BYU is the third seed in the East. The Cougars dropped the Mountain West championship on Sunday to Colorado State 3-0. BYU is 26-4 and have appeared in 17 NCAA tournaments with a record of 22-17.
"We're excited just to be able to fly out as a team for a match," senior Erika Hansen says. "We've never done that as a team. To play a team like BYU is exciting. We've never seen them play, but we could be the dream team of the tournament."
No Ivy team has ever won a game in the NCAA tournament. Princeton was the only league team to ever record double-digit points in a game, losing the third game to Maryland 15-11.
"We're excited to go out there and try to be the first Ivy League team to win a match in the NCAA tournament," sophomore Martha Moore says.
The winner of the Princeton/BYU match will take on the winner of the Arizona St./Wisconsin match on Saturday.
