PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Princeton University field hockey team knew that it had to take care of business before it could start watching the scoreboard. The Tigers traveled to the always-dangerous Franklin Field for a showdown against Penn, knowing that a victory kept their hopes alive for another league crown.
The Tigers did their part, scoring four unanswered goals to take the victory 4-0. Melanie Meercshwam opened the scoring with a goal on a penalty corner. Ilvy Friebe and Hilary Matson both had a goal and an assist while Kellie Maul added a late insurance goal as Princeton ended its regular season with an 11-6 record. The Tigers went 6-1 in the league, but it would take another 70 minutes of field hockey to know if that would be enough for an unprecedented sixth straight league crown.
Actually, it took more than 70 minutes. That was fine, though, as Harvard defeated Brown 3-2 in overtime to hand the Bears their first league loss. Brown and Princeton end the season with identical league records and share the title. Brown will take the league's automatic berth due to its head-to-head win in October.
