Princeton Drops Heartbreaker in Women's Hockey

PRINCETON, N.J. - After coming from behind twice to earn a tie in its season opener yesterday, the Princeton women's hockey team came into today's game with new life. That life was taken out of the Tigers at 18:39 into the third period when Jessica Tabb of Providence scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway.
After giving up a goal in the first period, Princeton came out on the offensive in the second period. The Tigers converted on a power play opportunity—one of three in the second period to tie the game up at one a piece. Nikola Holmes (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) flipped a rebound past Friar goaltender Sara DeCosta for her first career tally. Princeton, which had only two shots on three power play opportunities in yesterday's second period, made sure there was not a repeat of that performance. The Tigers fired 12 shots at DeCosta in the period, 10 of them coming with the extra skater.
The third period was even, with both teams matching each others scoring opportunities until Tabb's game-winning breakaway. She took a lead pass from Kim Mathias that landed perfectly on the tape and made one move on Tiger goalie Susam Maes (So., Manitowoc, Wisc.).
Princeton hits the road for the first time this season next weekend with games at Maine on Saturday and New Hampshire on Sunday.
