CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The No. 1 ranked Harvard women's hockey team scored five third period goals, including four on a five-minute major penalty to muscle past Ivy League rival, Princeton, 7-1 on Sunday afternoon at Bright Hockey Center. The victory pushed Harvard's record to 8-2, while the Tigers fell to 4-5-2.
Harvard jumped out to an early lead as junior Angie Francisco (Duluth, MN) scored the first of five Harvard power-play goals on the day. In the second, junior Kiirsten Suurkask (Tsawwassen, BC) scored her first of two on the day to give the Crimson a comfortable 2-0 lead. However, things would change dramatically as the Crimson erupted for five goals in the final 20 minutes.
Princeton sealed its fate just 19 seconds into the final stanza, as Nikola Holmes was assessed a five-minute major for boarding Harvard freshman Jamie Hagerman (Wenham, MA). The Crimson took full advantage of the opportunity. Suurkask scored her second just before classmate Tara Dunn (New Glasgow, NS) tallied a pair of goals just 15 seconds apart. Sophomore Angela Ruggiero (Harper Woods, MI) added one just 19 seconds before the end of the Princeton sentence. Courtney Smith (Summitt, NJ) would later tally her first of the season to close out the Harvard scoring.
Suurkask's two goals and three assists matched a career-high for points in a game. Dunn finished the game with two goals and two assists, while Ruggiero tallied three helpers on the day.
Senior goalie Crystal Springer (Flin Flon, MAN) made 20 saves to record her fourth victory of the season.
