PRINCETON, N.J. - Hilary Matson (So., Marathon, N.Y.) took a pass from Kate Fox (Jr., Chichester, N.Y.) on a broken penalty corner and blasted the game-winning goal from just inside the circle with 1:27 remaining to give the No. 4 Princeton University field hockey team a 2-1 win over Rutgers.
"Where I was standing is usually open," Matson said of her goal. "I thought I had time, but not as much as I had. I'm usually not the one taking that shot."
Princeton needed the goal because Rutgers forward Janel Hileman took a long pass from Meredith Pizzulli and fired a missile into the goal, beating Ivy League Player of the Week Meg DeJong (Sr., Tinton Falls, N.J.) for the first goal she has allowed in 407 minutes. Princeton led 1-0 after Fox put a first-half penalty stroke into the back left corner of the net.
