STORRS, Ct. - And so the dreams of a perfect season end. Princeton traveled to Storrs, Connecticut, as the only field hockey team in Division I without a loss.
They left as the only team with just one loss.
Connecticut scored on two early penalty corners (Katie Stephens, 2:03 and Carrie Mahoney, 12:30) and then held off numerous Princeton rushes in a 2-1 win.
After the second goal, Princeton coach Beth Bozman called timeout and implored a more inspired attack. Although she got it, the hole was just too deep. Kirsty Hale (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) deflected a shot from Hilary Matson (So., Marathon, N.Y.) for Princeton's only goal with 19:46 remaining in the game.
The rest of the attack was about a missed opportunity here and a fabulous save there. Connecticut keeper Danielle Vile made eight saves, one better than Princeton's Meg DeJong (Sr., Tinton Falls, N.J.).
Princeton will continue its quest for a fifth straight Ivy-League crown when it hosts Harvard on Saturday at noon. On Sunday, the Tigers will host No. 1 Old Dominion at 1 p.m.
