PRINCETON, N.J. - Freshman Susan Maes (Mantiwoc, Wis.) recorded her first collegiate shutout in Princeton's 6-0 victory over Maine in tonight's season opener at Baker Rink. Solid performances from other Tiger rookies, Andrea Kilbourne (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) and Melissa Deland (Washington, D.C.) helped contribute to Princeton's all-around effort.
Princeton (1-0) came out strong, scoring three goals in the first period, the first two being on the power play. The first came at 2:46 when Kilbourne netted her first goal of the season off of an assist from senior Ali Coughlin (Lincoln, MA). Coughlin struck just under two minutes later at 4:11, scoring the Tigers' second power play goal of the night.
Kilbourne and sophomore Annamarie Holmes (Apple Valley, Minn.) assisted on the play. The third Tiger goal of the period came at 18:15 when sophomore Abbey Fox (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) netted her first of the season off of assists by junior assistants captains Danya Marshman (Huntington Woods, Mich.) and Dani Holtshlag (Depere, Wis.).
Deland connected with Holmes for her first score of the night at 6:20 of the second period. After almost 12 scoreless minutes, Coughlin struck again for her second goal of the night. Once again, Kilbourne assisted on the play along with freshman Aviva Grumet-Morris (Evanston, Ill.).
Deland provided the Tigers' only offense of the third period, scoring her second goal of the night off of an assist by classmate Wanda Mason (Lewiston, Maine) at 11:01.
For the Tigers, Maes turned away 17 Black Bear attempts while Maine netminder Kathleen Hedges had 37 saves between the pipes.
The Tigers will face Maine again tomorrow night at 7:00 at Baker Rink.
