PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton women's hockey team captured a much-needed victory from the Dartmouth Big Green this afternoon in front of 236 at Baker Rink. The Tigers (6-6-4, 5-5-2 ECAC) jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and held on for the 5-4 win over Dartmouth (7-6-0, 6-3-0 ECAC) Annamarie Holmes (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.), who scored a goal and added two assists, took a slap shot, and Melissa Deland (So., Washington, D.C.) scored on a deflection at 14:02 of the third period for the game winner.
Holmes scored the first goal for the Tigers, only 1:15 into the game. Laura Hays (Jr., Meadville, Pa.) scored on assists from Nikola Holmes (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) and Aviva Grumet-Morris (So., Evanston, Ill.) at the 15:28 mark. Dani Holtschlag (Sr., DePere, Wisc.) found the back of the net only 24 seconds later on assists from Jessica Fedderly (So., Wyoming, Minn.) and Deland.
With the score 3-0 at the first intermission, Dartmouth came out of the locker room and tallied two goals. Kim McCullough took a pass from Kristin King to put the Green on the board. Carly Haggard scored at the 17:48 mark to pull Dartmouth to within one. Abbey Fox (Jr., Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) scored a power play goal for another two-goal cushion, but Kristina Guarino gave Dartmouth the momentum going into the second break with a goal at the 19:45 mark. McCullough added her second goal of the game just 35 seconds into the third period and the Green dominated most of the period. Princeton was out shot 12-4 in the final stanza, but it was the final shot that counted. The Tigers struck for the game winner when Deland redirected Holmes' slap shot past Dartmouth goalie Meagan Cahill.
Princeton will now break for the next two weeks for first semester exams. It next returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 23, hosting Findlay in the first half of a doubleheader with the men's team, which hosts UMass-Lowell. The women's game begins at 1 pm and the men's game begins at 5 pm.
