CENTERVILLE, Mass. - The United States Women's National Ice Hockey Team, announced by USA Hockey, includes twenty former ECAC standouts including 14 gold-medal winners from the 1998 Olympic team.
The U.S. team will train and compete through the 2001 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship held April 2-8 in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.
Tending goal for the United States on their road to Minneapolis will be two former Olympians, Sara DeCosta (Providence) and Sarah Tuetling (Dartmouth), and the 2000 Patty Kazmeier Award Winner Ali Brewer of Brown. Seven of the eight defensive players selected for the National Team skated the back line in ECAC rinks across the Northeast. Sue Merz and Nicki Luongo, two former New Hampshire defensemen, will skate with Harvard's A.J. Mleczko and Angela Ruggiero. Chirs Bailey (Providence), Tara Mounsey (Brown), and Annamarie Holmes (Princeton) will also anchor the blue line.
Three Providence standouts join a couple of New Hampshire veterans to lead the charge up front for the National Team. Laurie Baker (Providence), Alana Blahoski (Providence), Karyn Bye (New Hampshire), Tricia Dunn (New Hampshire) and Cammi Granato (Providence) along with Katie King (Brown) and Shelley Looney (Northeastern) all bring gold-medal experience to the United States Team. Brandy Fisher (New Hampshire) and two newcomers from Northeastern, Brooke White and Hilary Witt, round out the forward spots. The U.S. National Team will compete against five, possibly six, ECAC schools from December 15 through February 10 to prepare for the IIHF Women's World Championship. The National Team will face St. Lawrence in Canton, N.Y. and Princeton in Lake Placid, N.Y. on December 15 and 16. Dartmouth will face the USA in an invitational tournament featuring Germany and Russia on December 28-31.
In the new year, the National Team will play in another invitational tournament held in Lake Placid, N.Y. January 7-8, against Boston College and possible Providence. New Hampshire will give the US a last test on February 10 in Durham, N.H.
