Field Hockey Remains Unbeaten In Ivy League

PRINCETON, N.J. - The seventh-ranked Princeton University field hockey team bounced back from three-consecutive losses to nationally ranked schools to hand Brown a 4-1 loss in Ivy League play. The Tigers remain unbeaten in the Ivy League as they raise their record to 4-0 (6-3 overall).
The game didn't start out in favor of the Tigers as Brown took an early 1-0 lead when Susana Garcia (Highland Lakes, N.J.) connected on the Bears first corner play of the game 6:11 into the first half. Teammates Megan Patterson (Holliston, Mass.) and Cara Gardner (Hensall, Ontario) were credited with the double-assist.
Princeton took over the offense 10 minutes later, scoring four straight goals starting at 18:54 as Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) netted her fourth goal of the season off of a corner from Hilary Matson (Marathon, N.Y.) and Bridget Marchesi (Spring Lake, N.J.) to tie the game 1-1. Freshman Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and sophomore Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) followed Picketts by scoring one goal apiece at 16:06 and 10:46 respectively. Junior Aviva Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) rounded out the scoring attack for the Tigers with 5:31 remaining in the first half as her sister Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) fed her a pass at the post. The remainder of the game was scoreless as Princeton gained the 4-1 win.
Tiger goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) collected five saves on the day as opposing goalie Annie Owens (Louisville, Ky.) registered eight for the Bears.
Last year, Brown was the only Ivy League team to beat Princeton as both teams went on to share the Ivy League title as co-champions. The win was also the first for any Ivy League team against Princeton since 1993.
Princeton (6-3, 4-0 Ivy) will face Duke University tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 15) at Class of 1952 Stadium for a 1 p.m. start.
