PRINCETON, N.J. - Freshman Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and sophomore Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) scored two goals apiece to lead the Tigers to a 5-0 shutout victory over Delaware on Wednesday night at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The five goals didn't come easy as Miller was the first to get things going on a goal with only 1:34 remaining in the first half, assisted by Townsend. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into halftime and came out on fire in the second half with four more unanswered goals.
Townsend knocked in her first goal of the game at the 26:17 mark in the second period on a corner play assisted by Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany). Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) put Princeton up 3-0, with an unassisted goal six minutes later (20:21).
Miller tallied her second score off of a feed from Meerschwam with 8:51 remaining in the game, and Townsend scored her second goal to close out the attack with 4:17 on the clock. Sophomore Kristen Skorupski (Hatfield, Mass.) and senior Kellie Maul (Marlton, N.J.) were credited with the double-assist. Princeton goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) earned her fourth shutout victory of the season, making five saves on six Delaware attempts. Stephanie Judefind (Wilmington, Del.) made 16 saves for the Blue Hens on a Tiger attack that fired 29 shots.
The Tigers raise their record to 8-3 overall and are currently ranked No. 7 in the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association poll, and No. 9 in the NCAA rankings.
They will host Ivy League opponent, Harvard on Saturday (October 21) at 1 p.m. The game showcases the only two unbeaten teams in league play, as they battle for Ivy supremacy. On Sunday (October 22), No. 5 Penn State comes to town for an independent game slated for 1 p.m.
