PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior Hilary Matson (Marathon, N.Y.) scored her team-high 10th goal of the season with 11:39 left in the first half to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in an eventual 2-0 win over Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Sophomore Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) set up the first goal as she rifled a shot off a corner play into the goalie's pads that was picked up by Matson for the score.
Sophomore Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) added an insurance goal in the second half with 7:30 left to play, and was all the offense the Tigers would need to assure the shutout victory. Friebe's goal was the epitome of effort as she dove to the ground to sweep the ball passed the Harvard keeper.
Princeton goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) earned her fifth shutout, making three saves. Katie Zarcarian (Amherst, Mass.) made nine stops for the Crimson. Princeton and Harvard were the only unbeaten teams in Ivy League play this season at 4-0, and each needed the pivotal win to put them in place down the stretch to earn an Ivy League Championship. With two games left in Ivy League play, Princeton holds first-place alone.
The Tigers will have to face Cornell on the road before closing out their Ivy schedule with Penn at home. Princeton needs to win just one of those games to claim a share of the championship, but a sweep of the remaining games will give them sole possession of the title.
No. 7 Princeton hosts No. 5 Penn State tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 22) at Class of 1952 Stadium in a 1 p.m. start.
