Field Hockey Falls Short In Overtime Thrille

NORFOLK, Va. - The eighth-ranked Princeton field hockey team lost a tough game on Sunday afternoon to No. 2 Old Dominion 2-1 in overtime. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 5-3 on the season, and have lost three games consecutively. Each loss has been at the hands of an opponent ranked in the top-three of the NFHCA coaches' poll.
Old Dominion struck first, taking a 1-0 lead with four seconds left in the first half. Angie Loy (Loysville, Pa.) scored the goal with an assist from Monarch teammate Tiffany Snow (Escondido, Calif.).
Princeton was able to tie the game with just over nine minutes remaining in regulation as Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) connected on a corner play off a double assist from teammates Hilary Matson (Marathon, N.Y.) and Kellie Maul (Marlton, N.J), and the game was pushed to overtime. ODU won the game in sudden victory with 9:55 remaining in the first overtime as Julie Miracle (Audubon, Pa.) found the cage after receiving a pass from Marina DiGiacomo (Mendoza, Argentina).
Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) took in eight saves for the Tigers, while opposing goalkeeper Mary Beth Freeman collected eight for the Monarchs.
Princeton (5-3, 3-0 Ivy) will take the next few days off before getting into the heart of their Ivy League schedule on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers host Brown at 1 p.m. at Class of 1952 Stadium.
