PRINCETON, N.J. - Lisa Rasmussen and Nikola Holmes scored goals within 40 seconds of each other in the third period to bring the Princeton women's hockey team within one point against No. 1 ranked Dartmouth Saturday afternoon, but a penalty on Princeton with a little more than a minute remaining in the game gave Dartmouth the advantage and the Tigers were unable to score in the final seconds. Princeton lost its season home opener 3-2.
Dartmouth got off to a quick start scoring two goals in the first period. A missed clear by the Tigers resulted in an unassisted goal by Lauren Trottier at 10:09 on the power play. A second Princeton penalty allowed Carrie Sekela assisted by Lydia Wheatley and Kim McCullough to score two minutes later.
Good defense by both teams left the second period scoreless and Dartmouth up 2-0. The Big Green capitalized on power play opportunities all day. Kristin King's goal, assisted by Wheatley, opened the scoring in the third period when the Tigers were shorthanded again due to a penalty. Princeton responded with back-to-back goals by Rasmussen assisted by Aviva Grumet-Morris at 12:01 and Holmes assisted by Andrea Kilbourne and Grumet-Morris at 12:41 to bring the Tigers within one, but the score would remain 3-2.
"I was proud of the way we played five on five," said head coach Jeff Kampersal. "I thought we worked really hard and made some good decisions. I was disappointed with some of our penalties. We need to get our power play situation in order and string together some wins."
The Tigers are 0-2-1(0-2-1, ECAC) and will play Boston College on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Baker Rink.
