PRINCETON, N.J. - The Ivy League announced it's field hockey postseason honors list this morning, with Hilary Matson (Marathon, N.Y.) earning top-honors as Player of the Year. Freshman Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) was selected as the league's Rookie of the Year.
Matson started her career as the 1997 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and has finished her career in fitting style as the unanimous pick for 2000 Ivy League Player of the Year in her final season. The senior attack has been named to the first-team for the third consecutive time. She led the League in overall scoring with 42 points on 14 goals and 14 assists, and was the leader in Ivy scoring with 26 points on 10 goals and six assists. In her career, she has amassed 40 goals and 37 assists for 117 points. She is currently second in all-time career assists and third in career points at Princeton, with the opportunity to increase those totals in the NCAA tournament. Miller, a freshman attack, was selected as the 2000 Ivy League Rookie of the Year. She scored nine goals for 18 points, including five game-winning goals. She finished eighth in the league in scoring during her first collegiate season of field hockey.
Joining Matson on the first-team is senior Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) and sophomores Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) and Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.).
Meerschwam was the second of five unanimous selections, as she finished behind Matson in Ivy scoring with 19 points (5g, 9a). She scored eight goals and tallied 11 assists overall for a second-best 27 points on the Princeton squad. Townsend finished third on the team in scoring with 23 points (10g, 3a) and finished first on the team with five defensive saves. Baril led the league in both overall goals against average (0.95) and goals against average (0.45). She registered seven shutouts on the season, including five in league play.
Miller found a spot on the second-team and is joined by senior Kellie Maul (Marlton, N.J.) and sophomore Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany). Maul finished fourth on the team in scoring with 20 points (4g, 12a) and Friebe tallied 12 points on the year (5g, 2a).
Freshman defender Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) was named as an honorable mention selection. She finished the season with seven goals and three assists for 17 points and made one defensive save.
Princeton finished the regular season 13-3 overall and 7-0 in the league, winning it's seventh consecutive Ivy League Championship. They have been granted an automatic bid to the Division I NCAA Championship field of 16 and will travel to Maryland to take on Penn State in the first round. The game is slated for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday, Nov. 11. If the Tigers win, they will advance to Sunday's 2:00 game (in Maryland) and meet the winner of Maryland vs. New Hampshire, being played at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Another win on Sunday would place Princeton in the semifinal game on November 18 at Old Dominion University.
