ERIE, Pa. - Andrea Kilbourne had a hand in all three Princeton goals as the women's ice hockey team defeated Mercyhurst College 3-1, Friday night in the first game of a two-game series. The Tigers got a strong game out of goaltender Sarah Ahlquist, who kept the Mercyhurt Lakers squad at bay in the first period, as she stopped all ten shots she faced in the opening period. The Tigers were led in the second period by their top line of Andrea Kilbourne, Abbey Fox and Gretchen Anderson.
The Tigers' exciting trio up front converted on three chances in a span of 5:42 to blow the game wide open. Anderson scored the first of her two goals at 6:11 of the second off a nice fee from Fox. Just a few minutes later, the crafty Kilbourne scored the eventual game winning goal as she beat Lakers goaltender Amber Natali to put the Tigers up two. Fox's effort helped set up the Tigers third and final goal as she found Anderson again, and that would be all for the Lakers' goaltender Natali. Tiffany Ribble replaced Natali in net and made 12 saves in a non-decision. Both teams failed to convert on their power play chances (a combined 0 for 6) as special teams proved to be a non-factor throughout the night. The Lakers lone goal came just under a minute into the final period as Lyndsay Barch spoiled Ahlquist's shutout. Ahlquist quickly recovered and stopped the next 7 Mercyhurst shots en route to the 3-1 victory.
Princeton will take on the Lakers once again, on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 2:00 p.m. in Erie for the final game of this weekend series.
