Women's Ice Hockey Takes Two From Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. - On Friday night it was Princeton's second period that helped them surge past the Mercyhurst Lakers, but on Saturday afternoon the Tigers took it to the Lakers in the final period with four goals in a 5-2 win. Trailing early in the third period, freshman defenseman Angela Gooldy scored her second goal of the game to tie the score as she beat Mercyhurst goaltender Tiffany Ribble with a wrist shot. From there, the Tigers got goals from Lucy Firestone, Andrea Kilbourne and Gretchen Anderson to raise their record to an even 6-6-2.
Megan Van Beusekom stopped 29 shots, and was a crucial part of the team's success on special teams, as she helped kill off all six of the Lakers' power plays. In the weekend series, the Tigers goalies stopped 50 of 53 shots they faced for a .943 save percentage (Sarah Ahlquist stopped 21 of 22 in Friday's victory). The Tigers could not convert on their power play chances in both games, but successfully killed off all 9 Mercyhurst power plays. The Tigers took the first game of the series 3-1 on Friday night. Andrea Kilbourne finished with a goal and an assist, and Laura Hays set up two goals for the Tigers. Hays was ejected for roughing with four minutes left after she got tangled up with two Mercyhurst players. The Tigers played an aggressive game and could have been in trouble at certain times in the third period. Thankfully, great goaltending and strong defensive play saved them on numerous occasions.
Princeton will take on the University of New Hampshire in the new year, on January 6th at 2:00 pm in Durham, N.H.
