PHILADELPHIA, P.A. - The Princeton women's water polo team opened CWPA League play with a trio of victories this weekend at Villanova. The Tigers began competition with a 12-3 win over West Chester before blanking Pennsylvania 13-0. The Orange and Black topped the host Wildcats 10-3 in the nightcap.
Against West Chester, Saroji Sigler (Fr., Miami, Fla.) led the Tigers with three goals. Adele McCarthy (Fr., Haydenville, Mass.) and Megan Voeltz (Fr., Irvine, Calif.) each added two scores. First-year players Jenny Hildebrand (Mountain View, Calif.) and Lisa Rockafeller (Lexington, Mass.) combined for six saves.
The Tigers returned to the pool in the afternoon to take on Ivy member Pennsylvania. Princeton out-manned the less experienced Quakers from the start. Cassie Nichols (So., Santa Barabra, Calif.) found the back of the net twice. McCarthy and Alina Brown (Jr., University Park, Wash.) each scored two goals. Hildebrand and Rockafeller each played a half in goal, registering nine saves without allowing a goal. In the evening game against Villanova, youth and experience stole the show. For the offensive firepower, McCarthy had a hand in eight of Princeton's 10 goals, scoring five and assisting on three more. Katherine Kixmiller (Jr., Menlo Park, Calif.) added two goals, while Megan Bouchier (So., Menlo Park, Calif.), Devon Watts (Fr., Portola Valley, Calif.) and Jenny Edwards (Fr., Houston, Texas) each scored once.
In a tremendous defensive effort, captain Goga Vukmirovic (Sr., Sarajevo, Bosnia) played the entire game in the cage and recorded 17 saves for the win.
The Tigers are now 8-0 on the year, 3-0 in CWPA, and will continue league play tomorrow, March 12, against Pennsylvania at Villanova. Action begins at 10 a.m.
