DAVIS, CALIF. - UC Davis' Cat Bell scored three goals, and Kim Parker and Ligaya Smith each had two, as seventh-ranked UC Davis handed No. 13 Princeton its first loss of the season with a 9-4 women's water polo win at Hickey Pool.
Adele McCarthy (Fr., Haydenville, Mass.) had a pair of goals to lead Princeton, which began a four-game West Coast trip that includes games against UC Berkeley, Pacific and San Jose State this week.
Smith and Parker scored inside the game's first two minutes, giving UC Davis a 2-0 lead, but Princeton responded with a quick goal from Katherine Kixmiller (Jr., Menlo Park, Calif.) brought the Tigers to within one goal at 2-1 with 5:36 left in the quarter. Bell's first score came with 1:25 to go in the period and put UC Davis up 4-1. Princeton trailed 5-3 at halftime and could not get back on track offensively. The Tigers missed a number of shots which led to five counter attack goals for the Aggies.
"Defensively, I thought we shut down their front court," said Aggie Coach Jamey Wright. "It was a great defensive effort and was just what we needed after losing to (Massachusetts) on Sunday."
The Tigers are now 9-1 on the year, 4-0 in CWPA play. Princeton will be in action tomorrow as it takes on the No. 1 team in the nation, California, at 4 p.m.
