WASHINGTON, D.C. - For the second consecutive year, the Princeton women's water polo team completed the Collegiate Water Polo Association regular season without a blemish to its record. An 8-2 win over Villanova this afternoon at George Washington gave the Tigers a perfect 8-0 league mark heading into the ECAC Championship next weekend at Princeton.
The Tigers, which won the two previous meetings against the Wildcats this season, found the back of the cage four times in each half, and the defense allowed only two goals in the victory. Behind a tremendous defensive performance from captain Goga Vukmirovic (Sr., Sarajevo, Bosnia), who tallied 12 saves in goal, the Tigers pitched a shutout through two quarters and led 4-0 at halftime.
Princeton picked up two more goals in the third quarter for a 6-1 advantage heading into the final quarter. The Tigers outscored Villanova 2-1 over the final seven minutes for the 8-2 final score.
Adele McCarthy-Beauvais (Haydenville, Mass.) led the Orange and Black with three goals, while Katherine Kixmiller (Jr., Menlo Park, Calif.) scored twice. Jenny Edwards (Fr., Houston, Texas), Cassie Nichols (So., Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Alina Brown (Jr., University Park, Wash.) each scored one goal for the Tigers.
Princeton is now 14-3 on the year and will return to action on Saturday, April 1, as it hosts the second-annual ECAC Championship. Nichols scored the game-winning goal in the second sudden-death period against Maryland to give Princeton the inaugural title last season.
