PRINCETON, N.J. - A late surge gave the Princeton heavyweight crew a less-than-one-second victory over Penn and Columbia, as it won its sixth consecutive Childs Cup this afternoon on Lake Carnegie. The Tigers crossed the finish line in 5:44.80, as Penn came in second followed by Columbia in third. Temple finished in fourth with a time of 5:58.87.
After all four crews went off the line together, with Temple a few seats off the pace, Princeton and Penn raced the entire course without more than two seats between them. The Tigers led most of the way, with Columbia holding on to third place. With approximately 400 meters to go, Penn charged and pulled even and perhaps slightly ahead, while Princeton waited slightly longer on their sprint, then pushed back through and ahead for the win.
Princeton claimed the Childs Cup, America's oldest continuously contested intercollegiate trophy in any sport. Temple was a guest in the regatta.
The Orange and Black had no trouble in the other three races on the day, winning each by at least seven seconds.
