PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton women's water polo team finished first in its respective pool heading into bracket play of the 2000 Eastern Championships with a 14-3 win over MIT this morning at DeNunzio Pool. The Tigers used a 6-0 first quarter to build a comfortable lead and cruised to the 11-goal victory.
Back-to-back goals by Jenny Edwards (Fr., Houston, Texas) in the first two minutes of play sparked a string of nine unanswered goals by the Tigers, including three by Adele McCarthy-Beauvais (Fr., Haydenville, Mass.), to take a 9-0 lead midway through the second quarter. MIT dented the scoreboard for the first time with 1:01 remaining before halftime.
With a sizable lead, head coach Luis Nicolao was able to substitute often to keep fresh legs in the pool and give his bench considerable playing time. Princeton outscored MIT 3-0 in the third quarter for a 12-1 advantage with one quarter to play. Freshman Lindy Martin (Chicago, Ill.) and Saroj Siegler (Miami, Fla.) each scored in the final frame for the Tigers.
McCarthy-Beauvais led the Orange and Black with four goals, while Edwards scored three times. Five Tigers scored one goal, including Cassie Nichols (So., Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Katherine Kixmiller (Jr., Menlo Park, Calif.).
Senior captain Goga Vukmirovic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) tallied five saves while allowing only one goal in the first half of play. Freshmen Jenny Hildebrand (Mountain View, Calif.) and Lisa Rockefeller (Lexington, Mass.) combined for four saves in the second half.
The Tigers are now 22-3 on the year. Princeton will return to action later day, April 29, as it hosts Villanova at 5:50 p.m. The Tigers will continue bracket play on Sunday, April 30.
