Field Hockey Takes First Loss

Sept. 29, 2000
The eighth-ranked Princeton University field hockey team took their first loss of the season on Friday night at Class of 1952 Stadium. No. 1 ranked Maryland spoiled the Tigers' 5-0 start in the 2000 season by squeaking out a 2-0 victory, scoring both goals in the second half.
Princeton (5-1) took the Terrapins into halftime locked at 0-0, but couldn't hold them scoreless much longer as Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) scored the first of two Maryland goals on the night. Tagliente, a former high school teammate of Hilary Matson (Marathon, N.Y.), found the cage unassisted 3:13 into the second half.
Maryland followed up with an insurance goal with 23:12 remaining in the game when Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) found an opening to make it 2-0. Teammate Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) was credited with the assist.
Tiger goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) made 14 saves on the night. That total stands one shy of the 15 saves she has had to make in the last five games combined.
A moral victory of sorts was gained by the Tiger defense. Maryland came into the game averaging 6.8 goals per game, and the Tigers were able to hold them to two.
Princeton will move on to face Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. on October 4th (7:30).
