PRINCETON, N.J. - Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) led the No. 10 Tigers to a 4-2 victory over No. 7 Boston University (2-1) at the Class of 1952 Stadium on Friday evening.
In the team's first game of the 2000 season, Townsend scored two goals and added one assist. Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) and Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) added one goal each, with Friebe also registering an assist. Seniors Hilary Matson (Marathon, N.Y.) and Kellie Maul (Marlton, N.J.) were credited with two assists each during the game.
"This was a good start against a good team," said Princeton head coach Beth Bozman. "With the exception of a couple defensive lapses, we played well. It was nice to see the offense produce four goals after struggling so much last season. It was also nice to see some different people involved in the scoring." Princeton goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) made six saves and allowed two goals. Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, N.H.) turned away 10 shots for Boston and allowed all four Tiger goals.
For Boston, Jane Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) was able to even the score at 1-1 in the first half before Princeton unloaded three straight goals in the second period. Senior Kate Cusick (Allentown, Pa.) added the Terriers second and final goal of the game.
Princeton (1-0) will take on Drexel at home on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Class of 1952 Stadium.
