PRINCETON, N.J. - Despite early first period goals by Nikola Holmes and Andrea Kilbourne, the Princeton women's ice hockey team (7-8-2, 3-8-2, ECAC) suffered a disappointing 3-2 loss to third ranked St. Lawrence (11-3-3, 8-1-2 ECAC) Saturday afternoon at Baker Rink.
Holmes shot was high and found the upper left corner of the net, past the outreached glove of Saints goalie Rachel Barrie for the first goal of the game at 7:44 in the opening period. Holmes was assisted by Melissa Deland and Lisa Rasmussen.
Kilbourne's shot made its way past Barrie as the goalie was left vulnerable. The goal, assisted by Wanda Mason, at 15:03, put the Tigers up 2-0. A Princeton penalty a few seconds later allowed St. Lawrence to retaliate with a power-play goal by Isabelle Chartrand at 15:39. Suzanne Fiacco evened the score at 2-2 in the second period with a goal at 8:46. Then Caroline Trudeau scored at 11:23 of the third to put St. Lawrence on top 3-2
The Tigers had several scoring opportunities late third period. Princeton pounded out four consecutive shots on goal but was unable to get the puck past a sprawling Barrie. With a minute to go in the game, Tiger goalie Megan Van Beusekom was pulled and St Lawrence was called for a penalty giving the Tigers a six-on-four advantage.
"As well as we played we still made mistakes at certain times that really hurt us," said head coach Jeff Kampersal. "Every time we make a major mistake the other team makes us pay for it. Yet when our opponents make mistakes we can't convert."
Princeton takes on Cornell in an ECAC and Ivy League match up on Sunday, Jan 14 at 2 p.m. at Baker Rink.
