Tigers Shine at National Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Freshmen Josh McCaughey and Susan Coltman lead the way for the Princeton track and field team on day one of the National Open with wins in the 35 lb. weight throw and the pentathlon, respectively. Day two saw more of the same from the Tigers on the final day of competition.
Senior Scott Denbo, making his indoor debut of the 2001 season, placed second in the shot put with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 57' 7". Denbo was the second Tiger to provisionally qualifiy at the meet as McCaughey qualified in the 35 lb. weight throw on Friday. Princeton had two other shot putters in the top ten- Jeff Petrulis placed fifth (54' 10") and Rocky Craley finished eighth (53' 7.75"). Liam Morton finished 14th (50' 2.50") in the event.
Junior Ryan Smith placed second in the 500-meter dash with a time of one minute, 3.70 seconds, followed by Paul Gallup in 14th place (1:05.67) and David Foster in 32nd (1:07.34). In the 400-meter dash, Jim Murphy (50.61) and John Karakoulakis (50.61) both placed 37th and Jeff Key finished 58th (52.04). Seamus Whelton (2:26.65) and Biren Roy (2:26.71) placed third and fourth in the 1,000-meter run, Peter Cioni was 33rd (2:39.59). Tristin Colangelo led the way in the mile run with an eighth place finish (4:11.13) followed by Pat Anglin in 12th place (4:14.59), Mike Baird in 13th (4:14.60) and Kevin Gallagher in 20th place (4:16.69). Jon Kieliszak (8:32.55) and Tensai Asfaw (8:37.15) placed 21st and 23rd in the 3,000 meters and Austin Webb (22.53) and Martin Rawls-Meehan (22.59) placed 27th and 30th in the 200-meter dash. David Dean finished 13th in the 800 meters (1:52.76) and Steve Wiley finished eighth in the high jump (6' 7"). The men's 4x400 meter relay team placed 15th (3:18.36) and the 4x800 relay team finished fifth (8:01.32).
Day two of the women's competition saw Lauren Simmons (2:09.75) and Liz Morse (2:09.91) take fifth and eighth in the 800 meters, Abby Corson-Rickert finished 35th (2:25.39). Catherine Casey placed 17th (9:56.37) in the seeded 3,000 meters while Becca Hylander (10:36.26) and Kristee Sherry (10:40.01) placed 10th and 11th in the unseeded 3,000. Caroline bone placed 29th (5:19.58) in the mile run. Dale Maffet finished 27th (59.37) in the 400-meter dash followed by Hasina Outzz (1:00.23) and Lauren Washychyn (1:00.47) in 37th and 38th place. Outtz also placed 23rd (9:13) in the 60-meter low hurdles, Natasha Yaeger finished 40th (9.44). The 4x400 medley relay team placed 10th (3:51.08) and the 4x800 team placed second (9:18.95).
In the field events, Rebecca Desman placed sixth in the high jump (5' 6"), Becky Haarlow placed 15th (37' 1") in the triple jump, and Khalila Thomas placed 21st (40' 11") in the shot put.
The Princeton women's team will return to competition on Feb. 2 at the Millrose Games and the men's team is back in action on Feb. 3 at the Penn State, UConn tri-meet.
