Princeton Crews Row Well At Head Of The Charles
October 24, 2001 | Heavyweight Rowing
Oct. 24, 2001
Princeton University sent nine crews to the famous Head of the Charles regatta in Boston last weekend and won two gold medals.
Both the men's and women's freshman fours won their events, with the women setting a new all-time course record in theirs, covering the course in a 18:58.4.
The women's open eight, which defeated several national teams in winning their event last year, finished second in the 2001 race, pacing the collegiate crews by 20 seconds. The Tigers again looked very strong for such an early phase of the season, trailing just nine seconds behind the United States National Team eight loaded with competitors from last August's World Championships in Switzerland.
The men's heavyweight eight finished ninth. In a race won by the United States National Team, which also featured national teams from Germany, France, and Denmark, the only American collegiate crews to beat Princeton were Harvard, Northeastern, and Wisconsin.
The men's lightweight eight finished sixth. The Tiger lighties placed fourth in the collegiate ranks behind Yale's top two eights and Navy.
The women's lightweight eight finished ninth after a rower suffered an asthma attack midway through the race. The Tigers, forced to row in sixes over much of the course, were fifth in the American collegiate ranks, behind winner Wisconsin, Radcliffe, Emory, and MIT.
The men's heavyweight four finished 5th and was the fastest collegiate crew.
The women's open four finished 13th and was the 9th collegiate crew.
The women's lightweight four finished 13th after suffering a one-minute buoy violation. However, the Tigers covered the course 16 seconds faster than the nearest collegiate crew from Wisconsin.
