Men's Swim Team Takes Two In Season Opener

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Princeton men's swimming and diving team opened the 2001-02 season with a double-dual victory over Ivy League rivals Pennsylvania and Cornell in Philadelphia on Friday night. The Tigers earned a big 177-66 win over Penn and squeaked by Cornell 172-71 to start 2-0.
Junior Jesse Gage, the Princeton record-holder in the 100-yard freestyle, won his first event of the season with a time of 45.95 in the 100 free. He also won the 50 free in 21.01. Sophomore Steve Flemming swam to victory with a 1:49.84 in the 200 back to give Princeton a comfortable 126-16 lead over host Penn.
Junior Carl Hessler won both the 200 free (1:41.75) and the 500 free (4:36.56), freshman Evan Delaney won his first collegiate event with a victory in the 200 breast (2:07.52) and sophomore Juan Valdivieso came up big with two first-place finishes. Valdivieso won the 1000 free in 9:29.10 and the 200 fly in 1:50.98. Chester Yarbrough chipped in with his 200 IM win over Pennsylvania.
Freshman diver Kent DeMond won the 3-meter competition, racking up 280.70 total points. Princeton freshman Nick Lee finished second behind DeMond. Cornell's Anthony Schultz won the 1-meter board with DeMond taking second.
The Tigers continue their regular season win streak that extends back to 1999. Princeton will take its win streak on the road and battle Brown in Providence on Sunday at noon.
