Field Hockey Sweeps Ivy League Awards

PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) was unanimously selected as the Ivy League Player of the Year and teammate Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.) was chosen as the league's Rookie of the Year to give Princeton field hockey a sweep of the major awards for the second consecutive season, and the sixth time in the program's history.
Friebe, who set Ivy League records for goals (15) and points (37) in a season, was also a unanimous first-team selection after receiving second-team honors last year. Only one team outscored her in league play this year as she consistently led the nation in points (69), points per game (4.059), goals (29) and goals per game (1.706). She also established a new Princeton record for goals in a season.
Martirosian finished with 13 points (4 goals, 5 assists) on the season, including three-game-winning tallies as she started every game for the Tigers. She was also named to the second-team All-Ivy. Junior Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) joined Friebe as one of three Princeton unanimous first-team selections. Townsend had 10 goals and four assists from her sweeper position and was also the team's co-captain. Sophomore Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.), the 2000 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, scored three goals and had a league-leading 14 assists. She is tied for third in the nation is assists, and third for assists in a game (0.824).
Junior goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) join Martirosian on the second team. Baril, a co-captain, was a first-team All-Ivy selection last season, while Picketts earned honorable mention honors in 2000.
Rounding out the Tigers' 2001 honorees are junior Rachael Becker (Broomall, Pa.) and freshman Jen Elliott (Ann Arbor, Mich.) who achieved All-Ivy honorable mention status.
Princeton was one of four sites selected to host the first and second rounds of the 2001 NCAA Field Hockey Championships. Tournament play will open when top-seeded Old Dominion takes on Massachusetts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10 before the Tigers take to the field at 2 p.m. to face Northeastern. The winners will meet in the second round, to be played at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. All games will be played at Class of 1952 Stadium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students with an ID.
