New Orleans, La. - Allison Cahill scored a career-high 28 points as Princeton rolled past the University of New Orleans at Lakefront Arena on Wednesday night. The Tigers built a 10-point halftime lead and held on to win by that same 10-point margin, downing the Privateers 71-61.
Princeton scored first when sophomore Eileen Powers went backdoor off Cahill's assist 30 seconds into the ballgame. The Tigers never looked back, leading the entire 40 minutes of play, building a 15-point cushion midway through the second half.
"I think we played well as a team tonight," says Coach Richard Barron. "We need to maintain this level of play and get off the roller-coaster ride we've been on. I think we played great defense and I'm happy with the overall effort." Princeton built a 10-point halftime lead with it's half-court set. The Tigers outscored New Orleans 18-10 in the paint and did not score a fast-break point in the first half. Cahill had 14 points and Kelly Schaeffer had eight as Princeton led 30-20 at the break. Schaeffer finished with 14 point on the night, Powers had seven points, as did sophomore guard Mary Cate Opila.
The Tigers improve to 5-4 overall. Princeton has scored over 70 points in each of its five wins and has missed the 70-point mark in each of its four losses. The Tiger defense held New Orleans to 34 percent shooting from the field and 15 percent shooting from three-point range.
Princeton wraps up its three-game Louisiana swing at Centenary on Friday night. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Game time is 8 p.m. Eastern.
