Princeton, N.J. - Rider used a 19-3 first-half run to attain the lead and never looked back in an 88-64 defeat of Princeton on Tuesday night at Jadwin Gym. The Tigers shot a putrid 36 percent from the field in the second half while Rider connected on 59 percent of its second-half field goals to drop the Tigers to 7-6 overall. Rider is now 3-10.
Sophomore Kelly Schaeffer gave Princeton a 22-20 lead when she connected on a three-point basket at 10:16 of the first half. Rider subsequently caught fire and by the 4:08 mark of the period, the Broncs led 39-25. Rider led 46-33 at the half.
Princeton scored first in the second period, but could only trim the lead to 10 points the rest of the way. Schaeffer finished with 21 points while junior Maureen Lane scored 11 for Princeton. The Broncs had four players in double figures with Katie Hall leading the charge, scoring a team-high 21 points. Kathleen Kearon finished with 20, Tanya Cross added 14 and Becky Hower had 12. Princeton freshman Ashley Rook ended the game with eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Rook connected on 4 of 5 field-goal attempts and played a season-high 21 minutes in the loss. As a team, Princeton made 22 of 55 shots and only 4 of 19 three-points attempts.
Junior Allison Cahill scored nine points and still leads the Tigers in scoring with a season average of 15.8 points per game. Senior Lauren Rigney, who scored a team-high 20 points in Princeton's win over Penn last Friday, sat out with back problems. The Tigers are 5-2 with Rigney in the lineup and 2-4 without her on the court.
Princeton returns to Ivy League action this weekend with both Harvard and Dartmouth visiting Jadwin Gym. The Tigers are 1-0 in the conference and play preseason favorite Harvard on Friday. Dartmouth was picked to finish third a preseason media poll and plays Princeton on Saturday. Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. tip.
