PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton women's hockey team upset No. 4 Harvard 3-1 on Sunday holding the Crimson scoreless until the third period despite being out shot 30-15. Princeton's stingy defense and superb goaltending by Sarah Ahlquist gave the Tigers their biggest win of the season.
The Tigers went 2-2 on the power-play and killed off two of Harvard's three power-play opportunities. Despite being out shot 10-5 in the first period, Melissa Deland scored her second goal of the season midway through the first. Deland's goal, assisted by Angela Gooldy and Susan Hobson, was only the second shot on goal that Princeton had taken in the game.
Jess Fedderly scored the first of Princeton's two power-play goals at 13:11 in the second period after the shot, on a give from Abbey Fox and Aviva Grumet-Morris, bounced off of Harvard goalie Jessica Ruddock's pads and into the net. Andrea Kilbourne followed up with another power-play goal at 18:50 of the second period. Kilbourne's goal was assisted by Fox, her second of the game, and Laura Hays. Harvard's lone goal was at 2:05 of the third by Tammy Shewchuck on the power-play from Kalen Ingram and Jennifer Botterill. Princeton did not score in the third but the Tigers held on for the win with relentless defense.
"We played a solid 60 minutes, pretty much mistake free," said head coach Jeff Kampersal. "The mistakes we did make Sarah (Ahlquist) made up for and really helped us out. We have been playing tough all year, we just haven't always been able to get a win. It's good to get back into the hunt again."
Ahlquist turned away 29 shots for Princeton, Ruddock made 12 saves for Harvard.
Princeton (11-10-2, 6-10-2, ECAC) will take on Niagara on Feb. 16 at Lake Placid, N.Y., and again on Feb. 17 at Niagara Falls, Ont., both games at 7:00 p.m.
