Hawaii Spoils Princeton's Water Polo Opener, 11-9

PRINCETON, N.J. - Despite five goals from Cassie Nichols (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and three from Jenny Edwards (Houston, Texas), the Princeton women's water polo team fell to Hawaii 11-9 in the season opener for both teams at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
A close game throughout, Adele McCarthy-Beauvais (Haydenville, Mass.) scored with 2:17 remaining in the fourth quarter to bring the Tigers to within one at 10-9. Hawaii's Joanne Ansell answered with her third goal of the evening to give the Wahine the 11-9 victory.
"Given that this was our first game, I thought we played well," Princeton coach Luis Nicolao said. "Any time you have a chance to play a Top 10 team early in the season, it gives you an opportunity to learn a lot about your team."
The Tigers, forced to play from behind most of the evening, held their last lead at 4-3 late in the second quarter. Hawaii responded by knotting the score at 4-4 before halftime and then scored two goals in a 41-second span of the third quarter to take a two-goal advantage. Nichols scored Princeton's next three goals, but the Tigers still trailed 8-7 with 1:20 remaining in the third quarter. Two Hawaii goals in the last 35 seconds put the Tigers at a three-goal disadvantage, 10-7, entering the final quarter.
Edwards' third goal of the game opened the fourth quarter as Princeton was within in two goals, 10-8. McCarthy-Beauvais, the only Tiger other than Edwards or Nichols to score, made it 10-9, but Hawaii held off Princeton in the final two minutes.
The Tigers will host the 10-team Princeton Invitational at DeNunzio Pool this Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. each day. Princeton schedule is as follows: Saturday - 11:10 a.m. vs. Santa Cruz, 3 p.m. vs. Michigan State and 8:30 p.m. vs. Brown, Sunday - noon vs. Indiana and 2 p.m. vs. Michigan.
