PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton University will host this year's ECAC Women's Water Polo Champions, March 31 and April 1 at DeNunzio Pool. Princeton enters the tournament coming off a fantastic CWPA League Weekend held March 23-24. The Tigers picked up three wins over Salem International 20-3, Bucknell 14-7 and George Washington 14-3, to give Princeton its third consecutive league title.
Princeton has received the No. 1 seed for this weekends tournament. The Tigers will face Harvard, the fifth seed in the tournament, Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. Later that evening, starting at 7:00 p.m. the Tigers will face the Golden Knights of Gannon. Depending on how the Tigers fair in the first day of competition, Princeton could play in the championship match held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 1.
For two of the Tigers, it will be their last home matches of their career. Alina Brown and Katherine Kixmiller have been staples of the Princeton team and both served as captains this season. Brown, who finished fifth on the team last year with 20 goals has seen her role change over the course of this season. Brown's goal turnout has fallen as her assist totals increase. Kixmiller, who accepted a more defensive role last season, still finished the year with 39 goals. Kixmiller is one of the strongest outside shooters of the team. Last year, her all-around talent received recognition as she was named to the second-team All-Mid-Atlantic team. Kixmiller had three goals in the latest victory over George Washington. Entering the 2001 season, Kixmiller was second in Princeton history with 148 career goals.
The Tigers are the favorite in this weekend's tournament yet they are bound to face some tough competition.
