PRINCETON, N.J. - Annamarie Holmes (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Andrea Kilbourne (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) have been named to the 25-player roster for the 2001-02 USA Hockey women's national team. The roster was announced today at the conclusion of the 45-player 2001 USA Hockey Women's National Team Festival, held Aug. 13-22 in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Holmes trained and competed on the 2000-01 national team, while Kilbourne is one of just five skaters making their first appearance on a U.S. women's national or select team. As a result of their selection, both players will be out of school for the 2001-02 academic year.
"We are definitely proud of them," says head coach Jeff Kampersal. "We will miss them, but anytime that you get the chance to wear a USA jersey then you have to take it."
Kilbourne, one of the most prolific scorers in recent Princeton history, has led the team in scoring each of the past three seasons. She finished the 2000-01 season with 49 points (22g, 27a) and was a second-team All-ECAC and All-Ivy selection. The team's captain in 2000-01, Kilbourne was to serve in that capacity in the upcoming season. Holmes, a defenseman while at Princeton, will line up at forward for the national team. She completed her third season at Princeton in 1999-2000 before leaving school to join the national team. As a junior, she finished third overall among ECAC defensemen in scoring and second on the Tigers with 30 points (12g, 18a). Holmes was a three-time All-Ivy and two-time second-team All-ECAC selection.
The roster also includes 14 members of the gold-medal winning 1998 U.S. Olympic women's team and six players with U.S. women's national team experience.
The national team's pre-Olympic preparation includes a full schedule of national and international games and opens with a four game-series Sept. 2-7 in Beijing against the Chinese and Russian national teams during the 2001 Friendship Cup. The Visa "Skate To Salt Lake Tour" featuring USA Hockey, which features 21 stops in 18 different cities and will kick off on October 5 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis., against the Western Collegiate Hockey Association All-Stars.
