PRINCETON, N.J. - Despite four goals from junior Kevin Foster (Davis, Calif.) and three from classmate Robert Urquhart (Ann Arbor, Mich.), the men's water polo team suffered a 11-10 overtime loss to Harvard in the opening game of this weekend's North/South Invitational. The Tiger's first loss of the season drops them to 7-1, including a 4-0 mark in the Collegiate Water Polo Association. Harvard moves to 5-2 with the win.
The Crimson held a 5-4 lead at the half but the two teams traded goals throughout the remaining two periods of regulation. Harvard got a goal from Istvan Zollei with just 1:36 remaining to tie the game at 8-8 and send it into overtime.
Harvard struck first in overtime, taking a 9-8 lead on a goal by Theo Ludwick. Senior co-captain Marshall Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied the score at 9-9 with his goal off of a pass from Urquhart with 1:41 left in the first overtime period.
The Crimson went up 10-9 with Sean Cheng's goal at 2:39 of the second overtime, but the Tigers struck back once again with a goal from Urquhart at 2:24 to knot the score at 10-10. Unfortunately for Princeton, Zoelli was able to loft a shot over the outstretched hands of senior co-captain Jon Pharris (Newport Beach, Calif.) and into the inside right corner of the net at 1:57 of the third overtime period to give the Crimson a 11-10 win.
The Tigers also got two goals from sophomore Dan McKenna (Wyndmoor, Pa.). Mike Masterson led the way for the Harvard with four goals. Zoelli finished with two, while five other Crimson players finished with one goal apiece.
The Tigers return to action tomorrow at 9:05 a.m. against Iona for the second day of competition in the North/South Invitational.
