Washington, D.C. - Sophomores Adrian Melville and Ryan Rich scored goals six minutes apart, but Tigers' rally fell short as Georgetown held on to beat Princeton 3-2 in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday afternoon.
The Tigers found themselves in a 3-0 hole with 33 minutes left in regulation. Sophomore Eric White, who started in place of injured brother Jason White, stopped six shots on goal from the Hoyas' attack, but after a cross in front of the goal and a 40-yard shot into the top left corner of the net, Georgetown had built a comfortable lead on the Tigers.
Melville opened the Princeton scoring off assists from junior Gianfranco Tripicchio and freshman Alex Reison. Rich came back with an unassisted shot from 35-yards out and the score was 3-2 with 18:33 left to play. Rich would be able to muster a few more shots, but none found their way past Georgetown goalkeeper Tim Hogan.
The Tigers out-shot Georgetown 19-17 while White finished with six saves. Hogan registered four saves for Georgetown. Princeton, now 1-4-2, has lost its four contests by a total of four goals. The Tigers have scored 10 goals as a team, and with Rich's score at 71:27 of today's contest, 10 different players have notched goals for Princeton.
Princeton returns to Ivy League play this Saturday at Columbia. The Tigers are 0-1 in the conference and are defending their 2001 Ivy crown. Saturday's contest is 11 a.m. in New York, N.Y.
