New Hampshire's Carolyn Gordon posted two goals and goaltender Jen Huggon stopped 25 shots to lead the eighth-ranked Wildcats to a 2-1 overtime win over 10th-ranked Princeton Saturday night at the Whittemore Center.
In the first period, Princeton outshot UNH 5-3 and seemingly took a 1-0 lead midway through the stanza when a shot by Andela Gooldy was redirected into the net. However, the goal was disallowed as the referee ruled that the puck had been kicked into the net.
After playing to a scoreless first and second period, both teams scored in the third. New Hampshire opened the scoring just 15 seconds into the period when Gordon tallied her sixth goal of the season. Gordon's shot beat Princeton goaltender Megan Van Beusekom high on the golve side and was assisted by Kristen Thomas and Kristine Butt.
Princeton answered back with a power-play goal with 2:11 remaining in the game. Andrea Kilbourne fed Nikola Holmes with a pass in the neutral zone. Holmes skated the puck into the Wildcat end and wristed a shot from just inside the blueline past Huggon. Becky Stewart also added an assist and has registered a point in all five Princeton games this season. Overtime began with each team down a player due to coincidental penalties late in the third period. New Hampshire utilized the four-on-four play and scored at 59 seconds to claim the 2-1 victory. Gordon broke into the Princeton zone and beat Van Beusekom from the slot.
Princeton (4-1-0) completes the weekend tomorrow afternoon again against New Hampshire at 2:00 p.m.
