Waco, Texas - Eileen Powers' putback with one-second remaining in overtime lifted Princeton past Southwest Texas State, 82-81, at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas on Saturday night. The Tigers escaped with their first win of the year, winning the consolation game of Baylor's Women's Sports Foundation Tournament.
Southwest Texas jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the game's first eight minutes. The Tigers regrouped and with Allison Cahill's jumper at the 1:25 mark of the first half, Princeton took a 32-31 lead. The Bobcats closed out the half with a 5-0 run to take a 36-32 lead into the lockeroom.
The second half would go back-and-forth with Princeton building the biggest lead, a five-point margin, with only seven seconds remaining in regulation. A three-pointer and layup by Julia Brooks, however, would send the game into an extra period. The Bobcats scored quickly in the overtime period and had themselves a five-point lead with 3:45 to go. Cahill knocked down four free throws to pull the Tigers within one. Mary Cate Opila put Princeton up one with her basket at 3:05. Southwest Texas stayed within one and with 18 ticks on the clock, Alphalisha Johnson notched a free throw to give the Bobcats a one-point lead.
Princeton held for the last shot and when Maureen Lane's jumper rimmed out with two seconds remaining, Powers was there to clean up the offensive boards and layed in the game winner as time expired.
For Powers, it was her third rebound and 12th point of the night, tying a career high she set at Centenary last season. She also finished with three steals and three assists. Lane led the offensive attack for the Tigers, scoring 22 points, pulling down a team-high eight rebounds and dishing out a team-high six assists.
The Tigers connected on 69 percent of their free-throw attempts and hit 6-of-6 in overtime. Cahill, who finished with 15 points, made 5-of-6 from the charity stripe after not attempting a free throw in the season opener with Baylor.
Rebecca Brown, a freshman from Nashville, Tenn., scored 14 points and registered her first collegiate blocked shot. The Tigers drop Southwest Texas to 0-2 and improve to 1-1 on the year. Princeton will play its first home game on Wednesday night when it hosts Tennessee-Martin at 7 p.m.
