Women's Hoops Off To Rocky Start At Denver

Denver, Colo. - A cold-shooting night for Princeton and two second-half runs for Denver resulted in an 86-58 loss for the women's basketball team at the Pioneer Classic in Denver, Colo. on Friday night.
Despite shooting only 28 percent from the field in the first half, Princeton trailed by only five points at the intermission. Denver was able to turn that five-point lead into a 31-point advantage in less than eight minutes to start the second half.
The Pioneers opened the period with a 15-4 run to push the lead to 48-32. Princeton remained cold and Denver was hot, using a 9-0 run to extend its lead to 71-40, deflating the Tiger attack.
Senior Maureen Lane scored seven points, had eight rebounds and three assists for Princeton. Lane connected on only one three-point attempt while the team made 5-of-26 threes, including only one in the second half.
Denver had five players post double figures with Nicky Eason notching a double-double. Eason scored 12 points and pulled down 10 boards for the Pioneers, who were led by Katie Davenport in the scoring column. Davenport had 17 points.
Senior Kelly Baril, an All-America field hockey player for the Tigers, made her collegiate basketball debut and registered five points, three rebounds, two assists and no turnovers in 12 minutes of action.
The Tigers are now 4-5 overall and Denver improves to 4-6. Princeton will face Morehead State in tomorrow's consolation game. Morehead State lost to Northwestern in earlier action. The Tigers and Eagles square off at 7 p.m. Eastern from Magness Arena. Denver plays Northwestern in the Pioneer Classic championship game.
