Princeton, N.J. - Princeton made 36 percent of its field goal attempts and only one three-point basket as Sacred Heart dealt the Tigers their first home loss of the season on Saturday night. Four Sacred Heart players scored in double figures to drop Princeton 69-61 at Jadwin Gym.
Kelly Schaeffer scored 16 points for the Tigers and Eileen Powers notched 10 points, but it wasn't enough for a Princeton team that was averaging 94.5 points per game in two home contests this year.
Princeton led for almost all of the first half and took a 29-27 lead into the lockeroom at the break. Sacred Heart battled back, but never led by more than two points until the 7:45 mark of the second half when a Kate Maher's free-throw made it 51-48. The Pioneers doubled that lead with their next possession behind a three-point basket by Brooke Kelly.
The Tigers got within two points at the 1:44 mark, but Allie Bagnell's layup sealed the deal for Sacred Heart, which improves to 3-1 on the year. Brooke Rutnik and Kelly each scored 13 for the Pioneers, Maher had 12 points and Bangell scored 10. Rutnik, who fouled out with 2:14 to go, also had nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
After going 9-for-9 from the free throw line in the first half, Princeton made 13-of-20 free throw attempts in the second half. Maureen Lane and Rebecca Brown scored nine points apiece as the Tigers fell to 3-4 overall.
Princeton wraps up its three-game homestand with Hofstra next Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.
