Princeton, N.J. - With only five of 17 events completed, the women's indoor track and field team is in second place after the first day of competition at the 2002 Heptagonal championships. Harvard leads with 43 points, while Princeton (30) and Brown (28) round out the top three. Princeton's Susan Coltman, who had been the league's favorite in the pentathlon, had to settle for second place. With the preliminaries complete in most of the events, tomorrow's finals will establish who will be the champion.
Coltman held the pentathlon lead early with a 8.98 in the 60m hurdles and 1.64m leap in the high jump, with 1697 points. But after the completion of the shot put (11.49m), long jump (5.58m), and 800m run (2:38.21), she scored 3641 points, behind Dartmouth's Shaina Damm's 3862 points. Coltman also placed second in the individual long jump with a distance of 5.71m.
In the finals of the 5,000m run, Catherine Casey placed second with a time of 17:13.77. Emily Kroshus and Becca Hylander also ran in the final, and placed 8th and 22nd respectively. Chelo Canino placed third in the finals of the pole vault with a height of 3.6m.
Chanel Lattimer is the lone Tiger competing in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash. She won her heat in the 60m and posted the second fastest time (7.78 seconds) of all competitors. Her 25.61-second semifinal time in the 200m was third overall.
Lauren Simmons made the finals of the 800m run, winning her heat and posting the second fastest time overall, 2:11.87.
The Tigers failed to make the mile final. Emily Smith (5:10.32) and Randy Buzzell (5:06.90) competed for Princeton in the event. Kate O'Neill posted the fasted qualifying time, 4:58.53.
