Brown Trips Up Princeton Women At Home

Princeton, N.J. - Brown's Nyema Mitchell scored 21 points on 10 of 14 shooting and the Bears used a 36-16 points in the paint advantage to defeat the slumping Tigers 65-56 at Jadwin Gymnasium on Friday night. Sophomore Kelly Schaeffer scored 16 points and freshman Karen Bolster added 13, but it wasn't enough to overcome 24 turnovers and 33 percent shooting.
Princeton shot a dismal 25 percent from three-point range while Brown connected on 60 percent of its three-pointers and 46 percent of its total field goals to improve to 5-15 overall and 2-5 in the Ivy League.
With the game tied 15-15, Brown went on an 8-0 run and led 23-15 at the 5:51 mark. Mitchell's layup to end the first half gave the Bears their biggest lead of the period, 31-20 going into the intermission. The Tigers rallied, but Brown always had the answer. A three-point basket by junior Maureen Lane at 12:21 cut the Brown lead to 42-40. Brown pulled ahead, but Princeton would make yet another run and with five minutes to play, the Tigers trailed 54-50.
A crucial stretch were Brown's Stephanie Bruce hit a three-pointer, Princeton's Allison Cahill missed two foul shots and Mitchell connected on two free throws for Brown to put the Bears up 61-50 with about three minutes to play.
Lane finished with seven points and five rebounds while Cahill and freshman Ashley Rook each scored five points for the Tigers. Princeton, averaging 6.5 three-pointers per ballgame, was only able to connect on four triples, two of which came from Bolster in the first half of play.
Princeton drops its fifth straight game and to 1-11 when trailing at the half. The Tigers are 8-11 overall and 2-4 in the conference heading into tomorrow night's game vs. Yale. National Girls and Women In Sports Day will be celebrated tomorrow with festivities beginning at 5:30 p.m. Princeton and Yale are scheduled to tip at 7 p.m.
